That’s the Single Responsibility Principle—the “S” in SOLID, and the one that quietly shapes everything else. It’s more than a rule to memorize. It’s a way of looking at your code and asking: will this still make sense six months from now, or will it collapse under its own weight?
The core idea is deceptively small. Every class should do one thing well. Not two. Not “mostly one thing, plus a bit of this other stuff.” One clear purpose. When that purpose evolves, you know exactly where to go and what to touch.
When you lean into SRP, you’re not just writing methods and fields. You’re building systems that can breathe, adapt, and survive change instead of shattering the first time a requirement shifts.
Why This Matters More Than It Sounds
Seasoned developers bring up SRP a lot, and it’s not because they enjoy buzzwords. It’s because they’ve lived through the alternative.
When each class has a single responsibility, a few important things happen:
Maintenance becomes sane. Changes stay local. You adjust one piece without nervously scanning the rest of the codebase wondering what you just broke.
Testing stops being a chore. Focused classes are easier to reason about. They’re simple to isolate, simple to verify, and they rarely hide spooky side effects.
Reusability becomes realistic. A class that does one job cleanly can be reused in new contexts without dragging along irrelevant behavior, hidden dependencies, or surprise coupling.
None of this is magic. It’s just what happens when responsibilities stop stepping on each other.
What SRP Really Asks of You

One job per class. Each class should have a clear, single role. If you find yourself saying “it mostly does X, but it also handles Y,” you’re already drifting.
One reason to change. If you need to modify a class, that change should be tied to a single kind of responsibility. Not “the database changed and the UI needs a tweak and validation rules evolved.” Those are three different concerns—and three different reasons to change.
Separation of concerns. SRP is one part of a broader mindset: different concerns belong in different places. When each piece owns its slice of functionality, the whole design sharpens.

The Messy Version: Everything in One Class
Imagine a User class that tries to do it all. It stores user data and also knows how to save itself to the database:

SRP doesn’t stop at individual classes. It scales beautifully to how you structure whole systems.
In layered architectures—think presentation, business logic, data access—each layer carries its own responsibility. That separation keeps changes contained instead of leaking everywhere.
Here’s a simple sketch from a web application:

What You Gain
Code that reads cleanly. Small, focused classes are easier to scan. You don’t have to decode a novel just to understand what a type is responsible for.
Real flexibility. When responsibilities are separated, you can evolve one part of the system without dragging unrelated pieces along for the ride.
Tests that stay lightweight. Single-purpose classes usually need fewer collaborators. That means fewer mocks, fewer test contortions, and more confidence.
Where It Can Hurt
Too many tiny classes. You can absolutely over-apply SRP. When every micro-responsibility gets its own file, you spend more time jumping around than understanding the flow.
Over-engineering small projects. For small scripts or simple apps, heavy layering can feel like ceremony. Sometimes a well-structured, slightly “imperfect” class is good enough.
It’s not always obvious. What counts as a single responsibility is often subjective. It takes practice, domain knowledge, and a bit of intuition. You refine it over time; you don’t nail it on the first pass.
Applying SRP in Your Day-to-Day
So how do you actually use this without turning it into dogma?
Start with a sentence. Before writing a class, try to describe its purpose in one clear line: “This class does X.” If that sentence starts collecting commas, you probably have multiple responsibilities lurking.
Notice mixed concerns. When a class knows too much—about HTTP, database details, business rules, and formatting—that’s a sign. Ask what can be teased apart.
Separate data and behavior where it helps. In many systems, it’s useful to keep your data models distinct from the services that operate on them. It’s not a hard law, but it pairs well with SRP.
Refactor gradually. Don’t try to purify an entire legacy codebase overnight. Start with the painful parts: the god classes everyone dreads touching. Carve out one responsibility at a time.
The Bottom Line
The Single Responsibility Principle is less about worshiping a rule and more about respecting change.
When each class has only one reason to change, your code becomes easier to work with. It behaves more predictably. It doesn’t fight you every time a requirement moves.
Yes, you’ll sometimes introduce more types. You might add a layer or two. But what you get back—modularity, testability, and a system that doesn’t feel like a house of cards—is usually worth the trade.
